Going Clean Beauty

Sustainable clean beauty products

I naively used to think the term “clean beauty” was just a trend or flashy buzz word. Coming from the world of fashion retail, I just feel immune to trend words.

It wasn’t until I read How to Go (Almost) Zero Waste that I actually learned what clean beauty really is. In short, clean beauty products are made with non-toxic chemicals that won’t harm human health.

A wave of deceit and betrayal washed over me when I realized that non-clean products have some kind of toxic or harmful substance. One would think that selling non-harmful, non-toxic products would be a given but it isn’t so. Then again, so are the devils that we know well on readily available on store shelves: cigarettes, alcohol and drugs.

Now charged with this new information, I decided to comb through my beauty products and slowly start switching over to clean beauty products.

1. Davines Oi Shampoo

Recommended by my hairdresser Taryn, Davines Oi shampoo leaves my hair feeling clean for even longer than my previous shampoos. Davines has proudly been a proponent of sustainable beauty for over 40 years.

2. Ilia Mascara

My previous go-to mascara would leave my eyelids irritated, something I just grew accustomed to. Switching over to Ilia mascara ended irritation without compromising on lash fabulousness.

3. Drunk Elephant Eye Makeup Remover

My former eye makeup remover was also guilty of causing eye irritation. Drunk Elephant eye makeup remover was my first conscious clean beauty purchase and I felt the difference as soon as the solvent slid across my eyelids.

4. Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Moisturizer

Kiehl’s moisturizer has simply been getting the job done since 1851. While this moisturizer has actually been in the rotation for some time, it’s the Ultra Facial Cream that is the creme de la creme.

5. Supergoop! Play Sunscreen

When it comes to sunscreen, not all are created equal. An essential while packing for our honeymoon to Kauai was reef safe sunscreen. Supergoop! feels great on the skin and doesn’t leave a harmful film behind after snorkling.

Harmful substances from non-clean beauty products not only have the potential to harm our skin and bodies but also our planet. The water that we use to wash these products off with does infiltrate our own water system.

Is it a surprise that what’s good for us is also good for the planet?
